The news that he is to receive the MBE for services to Scouting in Co. Fermanagh came as a pleasant surprise to Maurice Lee, who said he was “overwhelmed” by the honour and “overwhelmed” by people’s reactions.

The current Fermanagh Scout President and International Commissioner, who admitted he was “very humbled”, commented: “Scouting has given me so many opportunities to meet people locally and from all over the world.

“That has been borne out by the many congratulations received from Scouters and friends around the world which has been lovely.”

It’s the latest recognition for the Scouting stalwart, from Kesh, who recently received the Award of Bar to Silver Acorn, which is only awarded after 30 years of service.

This was in recognition of further distinguished service to Scouting, having previously been awarded Chief Scout’s Commendation in 1991, Medal of Merit in 2002 and Silver Acorn in 2007.

The founder member of 1st Magheraculmoney Scout Group, Kesh in 1984, Maurice has held a number of Fermanagh Scouting appointments, both at Group and County level. He is currently Group Scout Leader.

At County level he has held appointments of Assistant County Commissioner for leader Training, Assistant County Commissioner for Cub Scouts, Fermanagh County Commissioner and is currently International Commissioner for Fermanagh and President of Fermanagh Scout Council.

Over the years, he has been involved in the organisation of many Scouting events and promoting Scouting’s international aspect. He compiled and published the publication, ‘Scouting in Fermanagh’.

Summing up his honour, Maurice, who is married to Louie and has a family of four, Stuart, Karen, Bryan and Jayne, quoted from Lord Baden-Powell, founder of Scouting, who said: “The most worthwhile thing is to try to put happiness into the lives of others.” Maurice said: “I hope I have done that over the years.”
