Devenish College, Enniskillen recently welcomed back past student and world rowing champion, Holly Nixon, to school.

Holly had been enjoying a break from training after picking up a Bronze Medal at the World Rowing Championships in Florida at the end of September/beginning of October.

During a recent special Assembly, Holly spoke to the school community about her experiences and achievements; she was also asked questions by a group of their Year 8 students.

PE teacher Colin Lyons said afterwards that “Holly gave a great insight into what life is like with the Great Britain rowing team and had a simple message for all present “Take the chances which come your way as you never know where they can lead you”.”

He mentioned that after signing autographs and speaking with some of Devenish College’s own sporting stars, Holly spent time with the Year 12 GCSE Physical Education class and even helped them out with their coursework!

Mr. Lyons recalled that Holly arrived at Devenish College in September 2005 “and it was not long before she made a big impression not only in terms of her sporting prowess, but also in terms of her academic study.”

He recollected that as a second year, Holly competed in a National Public Speaking Event and won her age group. He acknowledged her public speaking skills were evident during assembly in school recently when she confidently and calmly addressed the full school.

Mr. Lyons acknowledged that in sport, Holly featured in many teams during her time at Devenish College, leading from the front in cross-country and helping the senior girls team win their section at the County Sports in 2010 with Holly Nixon winning the 800 metres on the day.

He continued: “As Holly progressed through school her commitment to rowing became increasingly evident. However Holly managed to achieve excellent GCSE and A-Level results, fitting her studies around early morning sessions at Portora Rowing Club and weekends away competing all over the country.”

Holly presented the school with a framed Great Britain rowing top which will take pride of place in the foyer and serve as a reminder to all at the school 'of what can be achieved if you work hard and aim high.'

After a busy morning in school, Holly headed home for a final few hours before heading off to the airport, returning to her London training base to begin preparations for the new season.

Mr. Mowbray, Devenish College Principal, passed on his thanks to Holly, referring to her visit to school as being hugely inspirational.
