The Impartial Reporter Celebration of Sport 2017 will, in addition to recognising the very finest in Fermanagh sport, take the opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of mental well being and in particular the role that sport can play in that.
Consequently, the Impartial Reporter is delighted to announce that this year’s charity partnership for the Celebration of Sport is the Aisling Centre based at Darling Street.
The Aisling Centre offers a free, confidential and professional counselling and psychotherapy service to the people of County Fermanagh and the surrounding area. Their mission is to provide opportunities for hope, healing and growth in a welcoming and supportive environment.
The partnership has received the backing of special guest at the forthcoming Celebration of Sport on Friday, January 26, 2018, former world boxing champion Barry McGuigan.
“I have always been of the view that mental health is a big deal and is now more prevalent in sport and in general. I am concerned about ex fighters, ex footballers and others ending up with depression, with bi polar,” Barry told the Impartial Reporter.
He added: “This is an ongoing concern of mine which is why I will give any attempt to raise awareness of mental health issues my full support and vigour. I am looking forward to coming home and not only seeing the local talent but helping however I can to raise awareness of mental health.”
Aisling Centre Co-Ordinator Bridie Sweeney added: “Aisling Centre is delighted to have been selected as the nominated charity for this year’s Impartial Reporter Celebration of Sport. The benefits of sport and physical activity on our mental health are endless eg: improved mood, reduced stress and anxiety, improved self-esteem and a more balanced lifestyle. However, it is equally important to be aware of the pressure that completive sport can place on mental health.”
She added: “Well done to the Impartial Reporter for highlighting the growing awareness of the links between physical and mental health.”
Sarah Saunderson, Editor of the The Impartial Reporter, commented: “The Aisling Centre provides a range of invaluable services for many, many people living in our community. I am delighted that it has been selected as the nominated charity for our forthcoming event. The demand for the services at the Centre is increasing and funds raised at this event will help staff there provide support for people in need. While we look forward to celebrating the best in sport, we also welcome this opportunity to raise funds for a charity that offers local people hope, healing and growth.”
