THE new High Sheriff for County Fermanagh for 2018 has been named as John Maguire, the managing director of Belleek Pottery Group.
Mr. Maguire, who has worked for the company for over 30 years, replaces outgoing High Sheriff Selwyn Johnston in the prestigious role, a tradition which dates back to 1605.
The High Sheriff is an annually appointed and unpaid position by the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, which has judicial importance, along with ceremonial and administrative functions, and acts in support of the Lord Lieutenant of County Fermanagh.
Speaking to The Impartial Reporter from the United States, where he is visiting this week, Mr. Maguire said he was “delighted and honoured” to be considered for the role.
“I have great affection for Fermanagh and believe it has such potential for growth in tourism and will continue to positively promote our county and its people in the year ahead in my position as High Sheriff,” he said.
Before Mr. Maguire left, Mr. Johnston said he had the pleasure of congratulating his successor and wished him “both a successful and enjoyable year ahead.”
Reflecting on his memorable year in office Mr. Johnston said he was “honoured” to be invited to community and civic events throughout the county and further afield.
Among the highlights of his year were invitations to the annual Garden Party at Hillsborough Castle where he met Prince Harry and a reception at Winfield House, London to meet U.S. Ambassador Robert Wood Johnson, both of which he had the pleasure of extending invitations to visit Fermanagh.
He said he felt it was a “privilege” to meet the dedicated volunteers from many local charities, community groups and youth organisations and was inspired by the valuable work they do in helping to support others.
“It was also a time of reflection attending church services to mark the 30th anniversary of the Enniskillen Remembrance Day bomb,” he said, thanking all those who have given him support and encouragement throughout his year in office.
Shane McHugh is the first recorded Sheriff for Fermanagh with the full list including notable surnames such as Caldwell, Brooke, Corry, Plunkett, Archdale, Crichton, and Trimble.
Although the role is now largely ceremonial it has a number of rights and duties including receiving any High Court Judges, members of the Royal Family or Heads of State who visit Fermanagh.
