THREE years on and Enniskillen Comic Fest just gets bigger and bigger.
Last weekend saw hundreds of people descend on the town for another celebration of comics across three venues: St. Macartin’s Cathedral Hall, Enniskillen Library and Blake’s of the Hollow.
A number of workshops for local schools were held in Enniskillen Library with writer Michael Carroll and artists Paul Holden and Mike Collins offering their help and advice to students on creative writing, art and storyboarding.
On Friday evening in Blake’s, Mike Carroll interviewed hugely popular author Dan Abnett who talked about his Warhammer novels and his comics work including Guardians of the Galaxy and series for 2000 AD.
The sun shone on Saturday morning as the queue started to build in front of the Cathedral Hall for the main attraction with fans travelling from all over Ireland for a chance to meet guest creators and pick up autographs and sketches.
Classic comics were on sale and costumed Cosplayers patrolled the building and posed for photographs. Three very popular panel discussions were held in the library when several guests taking part and answering questions about their work.
This year’s chosen charity was Fermanagh Women’s Aid and there was also a charity auction which included original comic artwork, autographed items and memorabilia.
Signing autographs and meeting fans was Mr. Abnett who has hundreds of comic stories and dozens of novels to his name. He worked at both DC and Marvel and has written over fifty novels in the Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000 range as well as Doctor Who.
There was also artist Jock whose distinctive art style can be seen in Judge Dredd, Batman, Green Arrow and Wolverine. He has also contributed concept art and storyboards to a number of films and promotional campaigns, most recently for Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
Mr. Collins, who has drawn Superman, Batman, the Flash, Wonder Woman and the Justice League for DC as well as working on licensed properties, is one of the storyboard artists for Doctor Who.
He also enjoyed meeting fans while actress Jessica Martin, who over the past five years has created a number of award winning comics stories and graphic novels, has family living in the area. Her mother was a native of Ederney before moving to London and Jessica can remember visiting Enniskillen many times while back over for family holidays.
Commenting on the event, organiser Paul Trimble told this newspaper that it was “a thoroughly enjoyable day for everyone.”
“Once again the Enniskillen Comic Fest has been recognised as one of the premiere comic conventions in the UK.
“Here’s to next year,” he said.
