The inclement weather that arrived on the final day of Pope Francis’ visit to Ireland failed to put a dampener on what one Fermanagh woman described as “an amazing experience”.

Sharon Kelly spent the weekend in Dublin with family and friends and said there was a “beautiful family atmosphere” in the city. Along with Sharon was her mother, Mary Keenan, her aunts Mary Keenan and Freda Hudson, sister in law Julia Keys and best friend Orla Hynes.

And Mrs Kelly even managed to get her own snap of the Pontiff when he passed by on O’Connell Street.

“It was an amazing experience. There was such a beautiful family atmosphere throughout the city the entire weekend. It was fabulous to get so close to Pope Francis passing us by in O’Connell street on Saturday afternoon.”

The highlight of the weekend for Mrs Kelly was the Festival of Families in Croke Park on Saturday night.

“There were some amazing artists topped off by our own Nathan Carter. The atmosphere was electric. We were so lucky to get the experience of being a part of it.”

The weekend was rounded off by a mass in the Phoenix Park on Sunday and although the rain came it failed to wash away an enthusiasm.

“Although Sunday in Phoenix park was slightly wet we really enjoyed the fantastic celebration of mass with Pope Francis.”

Fermanagh priest, Brian D’Arcy, was one of the many clergymen to concelebrant the mass with Pope Francis.

Fr D’Arcy, who has spoken out against his own church, was censured by the Vatican in 2011 but said that the opportunity to celebrate the mass had “brought him a peace.”

Speaking on Newstalk he stated:

“I had moved on from being an enemy of the Papacy it seems, to be able to do the biggest thing that a priest can do, which is to concelebrate a mass with the Pope himself. And it was a moving thing for me.”

Fr D’Arcy was at Croke Park on Saturday night saying that it was “incredibly uplifting” noting the number of younger people who were in attendance.

Nathan Carter, who lives in Fermanagh, was one of the performers at the “Festival of Familes” at Croke Park on Saturday night. Donna Taggart, from Dromore, also performed on the night.
