Top local Simmental changes hands for 10,000gns at Stirling

Fermanagh breeders had another successful outing at the Perth Bull Sales last week hosted by United Auctions at Stirling Agricultural Centre where the Simmentals and Charolais breeds were in the showring.

Pedigree beef cattle breeder and butcher, Adrian Richardson, from Drumbroughas, Maguiresbridge, led the consignment of cattle from the County to realise 10,000gns for the reserve junior Simmental champion, Killynure Actionman. Bred by Raymond Porter, Omagh, this September 2009 born entry was purchased at the NI Simmental Cattle Breeders' Club show and sale at Dungannon in October.

He was sired by the 16,000gns Perth (November 2007) champion, Omorga Murray - sire of Cleenagh Avon, which sold for a 12,000gns NI female record at last year's 40th Anniversary Elite Heifer show and sale, Omagh. This one sold to Messrs Innes, Dunscroft, Huntly, Aberdeenshire.

Adrian Richardson also realised 5,500gns for the first prize winning Charolais bull, Derrykirk Edward. This March 2009 born bull was sired by the Domino son, Lyonsdemesne Tzar, and is out of a Newlook daughter carrying the Clonchambers prefix.

Continuing with the Simmentals, Harold Stubbs, Crummy, Lisnaskea, and grandson, Alan Burleigh, Florencecourt, sold their second prize winning Simmental bull for 5,800gns. Derrycallaghan Andrew was born in August 2009, and is a son of the noted Raceview King, while his dam is the home-bred Carnkern Titan daughter, Derrycallaghan Samantha. He has a Breedplan milk value of +6, a self replacing index of +35, and sold to Messrs Walters from Aldworth, near Reading in Berkshire.

William and Margaret Nelson from Drumacritten, Rosslea, won second and third prize rosettes for their twin Simmental bulls, Scribby Farms Ashford and Scribby Farms Alwin. Born in July 2009, they were sired by the home-bred Ranfurly Norman son, Drumacritten Special, and are out of a Dyfed Hello daughter carrying the Cleenagh pefix. They came under the hammer at 4,200gns and 5,200gns.

NI Simmental Cattle Breeders' Club chairman, Pat Kelly, and son, Frank, from Ballreagh, Tempo, realised 2,800gns for the September 2009 born Ashland Audi (SRI+26). He was sired by the herd's stock bull Raceview Nigel, and is out of the home-bred Raceview King daughter, Ashland Juliet.

Andrew Hanna, Rawe, Irvinestown, sold the fourth prize winning Stralongford Adam for 2,400gns. Born in November 2009, he is by Dripsey Super king, and bred from a Quitrent Patrick daughter carrying the Carrigglen prefix.

In the Charolais section, the leading price from local breeders came from Kenny Veitch, Lisbellaw, who realised 8,000gns for the third prize winning Drumlone Empire. This August 2009 born bull was sired by the Hermes son, Doonally New, and is out of a home-bred dam by the 13,000gns Simpsons Gregg. He is +6 for milk, has a self replacing index of +35, and caught the eye of James and Iain Mair, who run 120 suckler cows at Cumnock in Ayrshire.

The father and son team of Stuart and David Bothwell, St Angelo, Ballinamallard, sold their best at 6,000gns, while three bulls from the family's noted Killadeas herd changed hands to level at 4,900gns per head.

The August 2009 born Killadeas Enock was sired by the Meillard son, Dunlon Ulick, and is out of a home-bred Doonally New daughter. He was intermediate champion at the Cydectin final at Clogher show last year.

The spring Perth Bull Sales were held over a two week period at the Scottish sale centre.

Aberdeen Angus bulls peaked at 20,000gns and 19,000gns, while 133 bulls sold to average £4,676 per head (-£370).

Limousin bulls sold to a top of 8,500gns, and 82 bulls changed hands to level at £3,757 each (-£619).

Beef Shorthorns reached a ceiling of 12,000gns, and 36 lots set a new breed record average of £4,637 (+£77).

Simmentals soared to a top of 17,000gns, and 110 bulls achieved an average of £4,409 each (-£342).

Charolais trade reached heights of 45,000gns, and 166 lots were sold to average £5,888 (-£184).
