Ploughmen keenly contest competition on Fermanagh soil

Fermanagh and Tyrone Ploughing Society's annual ploughing match finally got underway on Saturday after being postponed due to snow in March. The competition took place on the farm of Timothy Aiken of Ederney Road, Kesh.

Enthusiastic ploughmen from all over Northern Ireland and the border counties of the Republic contested keenly for the major honours.

The Champion of the Field award went to Pat O'Donnell, from Moy, who had won the World Style Open class while the Best Finish award went to Billy Ritchie from Moneymore, who competed in the Vintage Hydraulic Open class.

The full list of results were as follows;

World Style Open - 1, Pat O'Donnell, Moy; 2, John McKinney, Lagan, Donegal.

World Style Confined - 1, Herbie Stevenson, Finn Valley, Donegal; 2, Pat Geary, Lennon, Donegal.

Vintage Hydraulic Open - 1, Billy Ritchie, Moneymore, member of The Loop Ploughing Society; 2, John McGirr, Maguiresbridge; 3, Jack O'Brien, Garvary.

Vintage Hydraulic Confined - 1, Tom McDermott, Fermanagh and Tyrone Ploughing Society, Fintona; 2, Noel McCrea, Omagh; 3, David Boyd, Clogher.

Trailer Plough - 1, Cecil Wray, Moy; 2, Ralph Foster, Brookeborough; 3, W. Steenson, Markethill.

Three-furrow plough - 1, Donal Deeney, Finn Valley.

Horse Plough - 1, William Bradburn, Killadeas; 2, Jim Kee, Donegal.

Best Kept Tractor(Prize of drum of oil sponsored by Mills Oils) - Tom McDermott with his International B 275;

Highest Points from day - Tom McDermott.

Youngest Ploughman - John Armstrong, Trillick.

The judges were Laurence McMillan, Tom McCracken, Des Wright and William King.

The presentation of cups and trophies will take place this Saturday evening, April 9 in the Bridge Inn, Trillick.

Representatives from Fermanagh and Tyrone Ploughing Society have thanked all the competitors for supporting them, the host farmer, Timothy Aiken, sponsors and catering staff.
