Students studying the Level 2 Diploma and the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Agriculture at CAFRE Greenmount Campus, complete Estate Skills training as part of their course. These are skills that come in useful around the farmyard in maintaining buildings, fences, surfaces, and services such as plumbing, according to Dr. Kate Semple, Further Education Course Manager at Greenmount.

The students also carry out work on the Greenmount farm whenever the opportunity arises and past student projects have included the construction of a roofed barbeque area and a swift house for the birds to nest in.

Following the opening of the new dairy unit students have been hard at work modifying the buildings in the now old dairy unit to increase the options for utilisation. All of the Diploma and Extended Diploma in Agriculture students have been involved in building walls to close off the old cubicle house and enable the building to be brought into use as a store.

Under the supervision of the Estate Skills instructor, Steven Taylor, the students have enjoyed combining the learning of a new skill with the opportunity to participate in a project which will leave their mark at Greenmount long after their graduation.
