An awareness seminar about farm diversification is being organised by CAFRE at one of Fermanagh’s leading self catering premises.

After moving into the Old Rectory, overlooking Killyfole Lough in south-east Fermanagh, Caroline and Mark Johnston were keen to investigate the tourism sector as a potential business. The existing dwelling house and outbuildings dating back to the 1890’s, were falling into a state of disrepair, however the Johnston’s could see the buildings had real character and there was potential for the conversion of stables and an old carriage house, adjoining the main dwelling house. A new business entitled “Fermanagh Self-Catering” opened its first two self-catering units in 2007, proving popular with visiting families. www.fermanaghselfcatering.co.uk “Having a family of four I saw the need to have family friendly facilities with lots of activities”. In 2012 construction started on a purpose built traditional style barn that is divided into two units, branded as Coach House and Lakeview.

The new building received SWARD farm diversification funding through the Northern Ireland Rural Development Programme 2007- 2013 and opened for the first guests in July 2012.

Kilyfole Development Association has also been very proactive in the area in terms of developing local amenities including an impressive walking trail around Killyfole Lough. This off-road walk has become very popular with tourists and locals alike. Caroline is currently treasurer of the Association and she highlighted her belief that it’s important to contribute to the local community.

As part of DARD’s ongoing support and commitment to farm diversification, an awareness seminar has been arranged by CAFR aimed at those farm families who wish to supplement their farm income by setting up a farm diversification project.

The seminar will take place on Wednesday, October 15 at 7.30 pm at Fermanagh Self-Catering, located close to Killyfole Lough between Donagh and Rosslea.

A number of speakers will highlight their experiences with regards to investigating and starting an on-farm diversification business. CAFRE staff will also be available to outline how CAFRE and DARD can help you get up and running.
