Fermanagh breeders had an excellent day at the Northern Ireland Texel Breeders Club’s show and sale in Gortin Mart recently.

With prices and demand remaining high for quality lots, judge Gareth Fyffe, from Botera Texels, near Omagh, awarded several of the rosettes to local exhibitors with the overall champion going to Allister Breen from Tempo.

In the Shearling class, first place and Smyths Daleside Feeds Reserve Champion went to Leona Young’s Redford exhibit, a Goldies Rocket son which later changed hands for the top priced shearling of the evening at £777 to David Hutchinson, Conckera, Co Fermanagh. Second place in the shearlings went to the Duvarren Flock bred by John Watson, Downpatrick for his homebred Duvarren Rolls Royce son, later selling to £682.50, while third place went to Marcus Barton, Lack for his exhibit which later sold to £420. First place in the Ram Lamb category and Overall Smyths Daleside Feeds Champion was presented to Alistair Breen, Drumderg Texels, Tempo, for his Botera Universal son out of a Blackstown Rambo mother. This lamb topped the sale, making £892.50 to Anthony Conway, Newtownstewart. Mr Breen also sold this lamb’s pen mate, a Bush Valley Upstart son for £493.50. The Kilrail House pen of John Young, Castlederg claimed second place with their homebred lamb, a Kilrail House Untouchable son, while Ernest Hogg, of Bunnahesco Texels, Lisbellaw picked up the third place rosette with his Thacka Unity son. Marcus Barton’s Woodbrook pen featured again in the pre-sale judging with his Botera Unstoppable son taking fourth place later selling for £378. The sale saw 48 lots sold and averages for shearling rams at £484 and ram lambs at £317.
