An MLA has claimed that DARD will not hold the new spraying and use of pesticides training courses in Fermanagh. They are only being held at the other two campuses, Greenmount and Loughry.

Fermanagh and South Tyrone MLA, Tom Elliott criticised DARD for their refusal to hold the training courses in Fermanagh as under new regulations, these training courses are required for farmers and growers.

Mr Elliott said: “Due to the introduction of regulations this course has become essential for farmers and growers who use pesticides. I am aware that the only location it is being provided is at Greenmount campus, although the CAFRE website says that the course is also being provided at Loughry and Enniskillen.

“Given that those availing of the course need to attend on a number of days, travelling to Greenmount takes a considerable amount of time out of the day, I requested that the course should be made available in Fermanagh.

“DARD has refused to facilitate this request, but have indicated there is potential for delivery of some courses at Loughry.

“It is unfortunate that the Minister is overlooking the needs of the farming community in Fermanagh.”
