A much loved wife, mother and grandmother, Mrs. Sylvia Montgomery Breen (formerly Henry) passed away peacefully at her home, Sylverne, Stragowna Road, Kinawley, on February 21, 2015. Aged 72 years, her death followed a long illness.

Sylvia was born on August 1, 1942, in Garvagh, a daughter of Mrs. Anna Henry and the late Herbert Henry. She was the second oldest of four children and is survived by her brother Ivor and sisters Beryl and Doreen.

She went to primary school at Garvagh, and she spent most of her life in Coleraine, where she was educated. She then went on to train as a teacher and she came to Fermanagh for her first post at the then Technical College, Enniskillen, where she spent five years. She then went to Fivemiletown High School, and retired in 1993.

Sylvia subsequently did sub-teaching in Lisnaskea High School, the Duke of Westminster Schools at Kesh and Ballinamallard, St. Fanchea’s, and Fivemiletown High. Her subjects included commercial studies, accounts and computers.

She married Ernest Breen at Terrace Row Presbyterian Church, Coleraine, and they made their home at Sylverne, Kinawley, where they had the family farm. Their four children are Christopher, Michelle, Nichola and Cheryl.

Home and family were major interests for Sylvia, whose three grandchildren, Andrew, Jenson and Victoria were very special to her and she enjoyed looking after them.

Sylvia was very keen on sport throughout her life, and at secondary school she played athletics, tennis, hockey, and netball, and she had been headgirl of her secondary school. After school, she still played tennis and badminton.

She loved all types of sport and she followed them on television.

She was an active member of Swanlinbar Parish where she attended services and church-group meetings regularly, up to a few months before her death.

She enjoyed membership of the Mothers’ Union, the Women’s Institute and the University of the Third Age (U3A).

She became actively involved in fundraising, particularly for cancer charities.

To mark their 40th wedding anniversary, Sylvia held a big coffee event at their home; there were no gifts, and donations were for Friends of the Cancer Centre and the Royal Victoria Hospital. They raised approximately £5,000 in total.

She was involved in cancer groups, including breast cancer groups locally, and she would have done different fundraisers with them. For a short time, she would have visited other sufferers to offer support.

Sylvia held a great love of travel and throughout her life she visited many countries; she delighted in experiencing different cultures around the world and she enjoyed world geography.

She led a very full life and she remained active until her health declined; even when she was ill, she went on holidays. Sylvia enjoyed the company of others, not only her husband, children and grandchildren, but also her mother, brother and sisters, extended family of nieces, nephews and in-laws. The many visitors to Sylverne always received a warm welcome.

Sylvia was held in very high regard as was evidenced by the attendance at her funeral service, which was held in St. Augustine’s Parish Church, Swanlinbar, on Monday, February 23, 2015. It was conducted by Captain Richard Beadle. The hymns were: When the Roll is Called Up Yonder; The Old Rugged Cross; and Safe in the Arms of Jesus. Burial was in the adjoining churchyard.

Sylvia is survived by her husband, Ernest, and their four children: son Christopher and wife Yvonne, and children, Andrew and Victoria; daughter Michelle, husband Niall and son Jenson; daughter Nichola and husband Dave; and daughter Cheryl. She leaves her mother, Anna Henry, who will be 100 this year, and her sisters Beryl Gough and Doreen Halliday and her brother Ivor, and the wider family circle.

Sylvia’s family are very appreciative of all the medical and nursing attention received, including that from Palliative Care, Marie Curie, Rapid Response Team and District Nursing.

The funeral arrangements were by S.R. Elliott and Sons, Darling Street, Enniskillen.
