One of the best known and longest serving businessmen in Fermanagh, Mr. John Creighton passed away peacefully at Gortacharn Private Nursing Home, Lisnaskea, on Boxing Day, December 26, 2015, aged 83.
A familiar face for many years at R.J.N. Creighton Ltd., Lisbellaw, John ran the family concern until he officially retired in 1998, when he sold the business.
He continued going into the shop every morning until September past.
Late of Farnamullan Road, Lisbellaw, John was born in the village, a son of Evelyn Margaret (Daisy) and Robert John Nixon Creighton, fondly known as Jack.
John was educated at Lisbellaw Primary School and Portora Royal School, Enniskillen, before going into the family business, at the age of 15.
At that point it was a builder suppliers and grocer’s. He spent his lifetime in the business, which he developed. It became totally a builder suppliers, hardware and DIY shop.
John went into declining health about Easter 2015, but he maintained his huge determination and he was very optimistic.
He married the former Olive Taylor, originally from Glenfarne, Co. Leitrim and later Enniskillen, where she lived from the age of 10.
The couple married on November 5, 1957, and set up home in Lisbellaw and raised three daughters, Sharon, Rachel and Judith.
Olive joined the family business and at that time helped run the drapery shop with John’s mother, Daisy.
Olive passed away in June 2014.
John’s main interest was his church. He was an active member of Erne West Church, Derrygonnelly, and Lisnaskea Independent Methodist Church.
He both lived and worked by his strong Christian faith.
Another interest had been travel and he did a lot of travelling when he retired.
His wife, daughters and grandchildren were major focuses for John.
He derived great pleasure from his grandchildren and loved seeing them growing up.
His funeral service, which attracted a huge attendance, reflecting the high regard felt for him, was held on Monday, December 28, at Lisbellaw Parish Church, kindly granted.
The hymns were Amazing Grace, I stand Amazed in the Presence of Jesus The Nazarene, and There is a Land that is Fairer than Day.
The soloist was Lynda Lindsay, who sang The Old Rugged Cross. Burial was at Tattygar Cemetery.
John is survived by his daughters, Sharon and husband Ian; Rachel; and Judith and husband Marty.
He leaves his grandchildren Laura Shaw and husband Jonathan; Andrew; Matthew and wife Rachel; and Oliver.
He also leaves one great-granddaughter Taylor.
Also surviving John is his brother Breen in Australia.
John was predeceased by his wife Olive and by his sister Evelyn Thompson.
The funeral arrangements were by S.R. Elliott and Sons, Darling Street, Enniskillen.
