Mr. Richard Henry (Dick) Venton from Lebally, Maguiresbridge has died.
Dick was born on March 5, 1911, and grew up in Killyshandra, Co. Cavan, along with his older sister Louie, and younger brothers, Jemmy and Willie. Willie was killed, aged just 19, in the Blitz of Belfast during World War II. Dick was also pre-deceased by his sister Louie and his brother, Jemmy.
Dick worked the land all his life, being first hired at the Fairs for six months at a time by landowners, at the tender age of 12; later working across several counties; eventually buying the farm in Lebally, Maguiresbridge in 1946, living there ever since with his wife, Olive.
Dick was a warm, loving, but incredibly strong man; self-sacrificing for the benefit of his family - his wife Olive and four children; Richie, George, Winnie and Linda. His physical strength was matched by his mental strength and conviction.
A tremendously hard-working man from childhood onwards, with little formal education (he left school at 10), he was self-taught, very widely and deeply read, and could recall exact events from any time over the past 90 years like it was yesterday, with enlightening or amusing anecdotes to match every occasion. He loved to discuss the big issues and could match the professionals in debates on religion, law and politics, up to the age of 98. He was a profoundly wise man, winning admiration and respect from all who met him.
Dick's family will forever cherish his many qualities, his sense of humour, devotion to his family and his love of children! Joy swept his face every time one of his 12 grand-children came to see him, and on hearing of the birth of his first great-grandchild (who tragically passed away).
Dick died peacefully in his home on December 3, 2009, aged nearly 99. The funeral service was held at Christ Church, Maguiresbridge.
Dick is survived by his wife Olive, four children and 12 grandchildren, who are so proud to have known and loved him, never forgetting his lovely qualities. Dick's greatest legacy is the profound impression he made on so many people, which will last forever.
