Mrs. Violet Ethel Stubbs

A native of the county, Mrs. Violet Stubbs died peacefully on December 28, 2009. Violet was born at Derryhowlaght, Derryharney in 1920, a daughter of the late William and Frances Chartres and was one of a family of eight.

Violet met and married Frederick Stubbs in Derryharney and they went on to have a family of five boys and two girls; sadly Eric died at eight and a half months.

The family farmed there for the next 16 years before moving to Necarne, Irvinestown where Fred took up the position as the gamekeeper for the late Captain R.O. Hermon. It was here that the family enjoyed 57 happy years on the estate. Sadly in 1989 Violet lost her husband and later her daughters-in-law Mary and Florence.

Violet's door was always open, not only to her family and friends, but to visitors. She was always fond and proud of her family and talked about them at great length, some 19 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.

Violet is survived by her sisters, Mrs. Jean Blair, Birmingham, Mrs. Florence Farrell, Derryharney, Mrs. Meta Whitely, Lisbellaw; sisters-in-law, Mrs. Sadie Chartres, Bonahesco, Mrs. Maud Chartres, Tamlaght; brother-in-law Melvin Whitley, nephews and nieces and her family William, Leslie, Myrtle, son-in-law Raymond Leonard, Drumgallon, Enniskillen, Kenneth, daughter-in-law Avril, David, daughter-in-law Frances, Jennifer, son-in-law John Campbell, Moneymore.

Her interests were very much involved with the home and she enjoyed knitting, baking and making presents for her family and friends.

Violet was outgoing right to the very end, attended Age Concern and was a very highly respected and faithful member of Derryvullen North and Castle Archdale Mothers' Union for over 40 years.

She also attended the monthly Tuesday Club and weekly Thursday Club at Lowtherstown Fold where she enjoyed the chat and outings. On a number of occasions she fought back serious illness. Her unexpected death occurred peacefully at her home on December 28, 2009.

A service was held at her home prior to the funeral service in Derryvullen North Parish Church which was conducted by the Rev. Glenn West, assisted by Parish Reader Dr. Margaret Knox and Pastoral Assistant Mrs. Eileen Cutler, with prayers and readings by her grandchildren Marilyn Leonard and Dale Stubbs. The organist was Mr. Wilson Henry. The hymns were "Shall We Gather at the River", "The Old Rugged Cross", "Abide With Me" and the 23rd Psalm. The committal was in Derrybrusk Parish Churchyard, where the Rev. David Skuce and Rev. Glenn West officiated at the graveside assisted by Pastoral Assistant Mrs. Eileen Cutler.

The funeral arrangements were by S.R. Elliott and Sons, Funeral Directors, Darling Street, Enniskillen.
