A much-loved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, Jim Morrison, fondly known as Snowy to his friends and work colleagues, late of 91 Derrin Road, Enniskillen, passed away peacefully on August 25, 2012, aged 82 years. Jim had led a full and active life up until his later years when he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's.
Jim was a true Enniskillener born between the bridges at Wellington Place on May 12, 1930, the second child and only son of Margaret and Jimmy Morrison and brother to Elsie. Jim attended the Model School and on leaving took up a position with Aiken's garage where he trained and worked as a car mechanic for a number of years before moving to The General Post Office, which later became British Telecom where he worked as a Motor Transport Officer until his retirement.
In 1953, he married Doreen Regan from Derryloughan; they set up home in Derrin Road and had three children, Finola, Linda and Glen. The family spent many happy summers together in Mullaghmore enjoying boating, fishing, swimming and dancing. Jim loved the area and developed his interest in fishing, becoming a keen and experienced fisherman in both game and sea fishing. He was a member of the Fermanagh Anglers, and fished in many competitions both locally and further afield with great success. He always had a story to tell especially about the catch of the day or the one that got away!
Jim had a great sense of humour and enjoyed an active life; he played a Santa Claus role regularly for the BT Sports and Social Club and was flown in specially by helicopter. In his scouting days, he cycled and camped throughout Ireland and Scotland in the company of his life-long friends. He enjoyed playing the trombone with St. Macartin's Cathedral Boy Scout Band.
Jim enjoyed keep fit and took himself and Doreen by means of a tandem bike around The Isle of Man; he played volleyball, badminton and was a regular member of John Maxwell's keep fit class. In his later years he took an interest in the local RSPB group, and supported his grandchildren's sporting interests.
Jim will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by all who knew him. The funeral service was at St. Macartin's Cathedral, Enniskillen, conducted by the Rev. Alistair Warke and Precentor Noel Regan. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Austen Stinson and staff of W.T. Morrison, Darling Street, Enniskillen. Donations in lieu of flowers to the Alzheimer's Society, c/o W.T. Morrison.
