The death occurred peacefully at South West Acute Hospital, Enniskillen, on April 16, 2014, after a short illness of Mrs. Florence Caldwell, née Devers, formerly of 2 Castlebalfour Park, Lisnaskea. Prior to her short stay in hospital, Florence, who had been a stalwart in the British Red Cross, had been in Gortacharn Nursing Home for five years.

Aged 84 years, she was born on December 3, 1929. A native of Lisnaskea, she was a daughter of the late Mr. Thomas Devers, who had been a butcher on Main Street, Lisnaskea, and Mrs. Florence Devers; her mother died in 1945 when Florence was in her teens.

Florence was one in a family of six, three of whom died in childhood. Her brother Mr. William Devers, who was the Vice Principal of Wesley College in Dublin, died tragically in a car accident in 1971, aged 42 years, leaving Florence and her only sister Ethel, Mrs. Foster.

Florence’s education was attained at the Moat School in Lisnaskea and she then travelled by train to the Model Primary School in Enniskillen.

She married Wesley Caldwell on August 6, 1957 - the same year that the trains stopped operating in Fermanagh; they had no family.

Florence was very fond of children and she took a great interest in the lives of her sister Ethel’s two sons and latterly their families.

During her career, she worked in the school kitchen in the Moat Primary and is fondly remembered by a lot of pupils from the school.

She joined the British Red Cross branch in Lisnaskea and along with the late Vi Ferguson, they were very much the instigators of the town’s Red Cross shop.

After retirement from the Moat, she played an active role in the shop. She received acknowledgement from the British Red Cross with a certificate awarded in 2001 by the Chief Executive for her devotion to the organisation.

Her funeral service at Holy Trinity Parish Church, Lisnaskea, was conducted by the Rev. Alan Capper, and the hymns were Abide With Me and The Day Thou Gavest Lord Has Ended. Psalm 23 was read by the Minister, and Florence’s nephew Brian read the Lesson from John 14. Burial followed in the adjoining churchyard.

Florence is survived by her husband Wesley; her sister Ethel; her nephews Ian and Brian and their families; and by her brother-in-law Wilton and his family in England.

The funeral arrangements were by Dowlers Funeral Services in Lisnaskea.
