Jean Margaret Grace Downey passed away peacefully on April 8, 2014 at her home in Gortindarragh, Rosslea, surrounded by her family.

She is survived by her four children, Nigel, Georgina, Lester and Olivia, daughters-in-law, Sharon and Rosemary and son-in-law George, sister Margaret, and her 10 grandchildren.

Jean was born on August 17, 1941, the youngest child of George and Emily Lester, Main Street, Rosslea. She was predeceased by her sister Olive (Beattie) Enniskillen, and brothers Edwin and Tom, Annahilt and Lisburn respectively.

Educated at Tattinbar School in Rosslea, Jean completed her education at Clones Tech. and later worked in Clifton house in Belfast before returning home to marry Jim Downey and starting her family in Gortindarragh.

Jean was a devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt and grandmother to the entire family circle. It was her warmth and quiet understanding which made Gortindarragh the meeting point for the family circle through the years. Jean was at her happiness when the house was full with family and music.

In later years, following Jim’s death in 2004, Jean joined some local groups, the Sunshine Club, Arthritis Care and the Friendship Club where she entertained them with her Keyboard at club functions as well as on their trips to the UK and across Ireland. These groups provided a much appreciated source of friendship and social connection.

A member of Inver WLOL 203 for 56 years, Jean remained a keen supporter of the Inver community and was waiting with great anticipation for the reopening of Inver Hall in July of this year.

Central to Jean’s life were her family, faith and her great love of music. Playing by ear, she was able to strike up any tune that was requested, and was particularly proud when on occasions she was asked to play the Church organ at Sunday service. Jean maintained a strong loving bond with all her family, particularly her grandchildren, providing advice and support to them all.

She will be very sadly missed by her family and friends.
