The death has taken place in St Macartan’s Nursing Home, Clogher of Mrs Maud Elizabeth Johnston. Mrs Johnston who was in her 99th year had been a resident in the home for just 10 months and had lived in her own house at Corby Hill, Terrew Clogher until she was 97.

Born in 1915 at Glenhoy, Augher, she was the middle one of five children of Alexander and Mary Jane Irwin. She married John Johnston of Annagarvey, Augher and came to live at Ratory, Clogher in 1942. Here she became a farmer’s wife and busied herself with poultry, home baking and her garden.

Music was a big interest in her life and she was organist at Glenhoy Presbyterian Church before her marriage and then for almost thirty years in Clogher Presbyterian Church. She played the organ for three radio broadcasts from the church in the 1960s.

She was also a great letter writer and kept up a wide correspondence with relatives and friends. Mrs Johnston was a member of both Clogher WI and the Presbyterian Womens’ Association at Carntall.

Her husband John died in 1987. She is survived by her son, Jack at Clogher, her daughter Barbara Chapman in Dungannon, daughter-in-law Audrey and son-in-law Steve currently in Brazil. She leaves five grandchildren, David and Rhonda Law and Francis, Eithne and Alice Johnston. She was predeceased by all of her brothers and sisters.

The funeral service was in Clogher Presbyterian Church and was conducted by the Rev Ian T McKee the minister of Aughnacloy and Ballymagrane Presbyterian churches. Mrs Dorothy Beatty was the organist. Interment followed in the family burying ground at Clogher Cathedral where the remains were received by Precentor Noel Regan, who said the committal service.

Refreshments provided by Clogher Presbyterian PWA were served in the Cathedral hall. W T Morrison, Enniskillen had charge of funeral arrangements.
