Charles (Charlie) Sullivan, late of Coolcrannell, Maguiresbridge, has passed away peacefully at the family home, at the age of 87.

Charlie was the son of the late Annie and Charles Sullivan, brother of Norman and Adrian, and the late Arthur, Ida, William and Lorna.

Charlie’s employment spanned 47 years. Initially he was employed with Taylor Woods’ Salaries and Wages department until its closure in 1966.

He was the last paid employee, assisting the auditors who were completing the Taylor Woods’ closure until March 1967, being responsible for staff financial details.

Despite ailing health, Charlie and his wife Mavis enjoyed contributing to and being part of the recent celebration and launch of Taylor Woods’ memorabilia and history. The gladstone bag in the photograph is one used by Charlie to carry the wages for staff. He had a police escort weekly from the Provincial Bank, Enniskillen, to the factory premises.

Charlie commenced employment with Kent Plastics in 1967, as Personnel Manager.

He regularly travelled to Great Britain to hire specialist staff for the plastics industry.

Many people in the community have remarked how Charlie had given them their first employment.

He was renowned for his loyalty to both management and work colleagues.

He could ‘support the management line’ in the work place and then spend an evening fishing with a dear union official friend, outside work!

Charlie left Kent Plastics in June 1978 and took up employment in the Erne Hospital, Enniskillen, as Chief Administrative Officer for Salaries and Wages. He was with this department until his retirement, making many good friends amongst staff.

Charlie’s hobbies were fishing, gardening, art, walking his dog Sandy and keeping his brain active as possible through daily crosswords and maths challenges. He travelled to many rivers and lakes for his fly fishing hobby, often accompanied by his wife Mavis, daughters Avril and Tanya, and in later years, his grandchildren.

Charlie had a keen interest in vegetable and flower gardening, and many of the flowers and shrubs he planted many years ago are still blooming in the family garden.

He was a keen amateur artist, a talent he passed on to his daughters Avril and Tanya, and which gave his grandchildren much pleasure. During his employment with Kent Plastics, he put together a monthly staff magazine, which he illustrated with amusing captions.

In Charlie’s later years, he enjoyed touring throughout the UK and Southern Ireland with Mavis.

Charlie is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mavis, daughters Avril (son-in-law Johnny) and Tanya (son-in-law Alfie), grandchildren Hannah, James, Andrew and Elliott and Charlie Junior and Emily Rose, and brothers Norman and Adrian.

He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and close relatives.

(The gladstone bag will now be given to Enniskillen Museum to be placed with Taylor Woods’ artefacts).

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr. Austen Stinson of W. T. Morrison, Enniskillen.
