The passing occurred peacefully at her home on November 14, 2014, of Doris Cundell (née Hanna). Born near Ballyconnell on May 20, 1936, she was the second child of Bertie and Etta Hanna and along with her late brother Norman and her sisters Sylvia Armstrong (Annagrane) and Audrey Arnold (Canada) spent most of her childhood in Cornafanog, Brookeborough.

Doris trained as a nurse, firstly in the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children for three years as a children’s nurse and then to the Royal Victoria Hospital to complete her General Nursing registration. She married Percy Cundell in 1961 in Brookeborough Methodist Church and they had celebrated 53 years of married life together in March.

Percy and Doris set up home in Cookstown, where they lived until 1984. Their three children Jill, Janet and David were born and grew up in Cookstown. As well as being a homemaker Doris continued her nursing career, working in theatre and casualty in Dungannon and later as a school nurse in the Cookstown area. When the family moved from Cookstown to Lisburn she continued to work as a school nurse in this area.

Doris was a private person and her interests were centred on her home and family. Both she and Percy were keen gardeners and grew lots of vegetables and flowers. She was a good baker, loved animals and birds. Doris had a sense of humour but she was also a very emotional person. She felt deeply the unexpected death of her only brother, Norman, just over four years ago. She adored her six grandchildren Christopher, Andrew, Sarah, Hannah, Katie and Peter; they were all very special to her and she was proud of their various achievements in school, university and in their sporting life.

It was only two months ago that she was informed of the terminal nature of her illness. She faced this news with wonderful courage and wanted as little fuss as possible so that very few knew of the seriousness of her condition. But she used that time to give clear instructions as to what she wanted when she passed away and to say goodbye to those whom she wanted to before the end.

Excellent care provided by the district nursing service and family enabled Doris to pass away peacefully at home on the afternoon of Friday, November 14, 2014, with her children and Percy at her bedside.

Following a funeral service in Magheragall Methodist Church on Monday, November 17, conducted by the Rev. Peter Mercer, and the Rev. Austin Hassard with the Rev. Edmund Mawhinney paying the tribute to her, Doris was laid to rest in Maguiresbridge in the grounds of the county which meant so much to her. Her burial service was conducted by the Rev. Mawhinney.

Despite her love of flowers one of Doris’s requests was that there would be family flowers only and that donations in lieu of flowers would go to Friends of the Cancer Centre c/o the undertaker - Ronnie Thompson, Lisburn.
