There has been widespread deep regret at the death of Joseph Cathcart (Joe) Bruce, husband of Helen. A much-loved family man, his peaceful passing occurred unexpectedly at his home, ‘Brulon,’ Orchard Manor, Ballinamallard, on November 29, 2014.

Born on September 13, 1929, at Tullychurry, Rossharbour, Leggs P.O., he was the fifth son of the late Wesley and Marion Bruce.

After leaving Rossharbour School, Joe served his time as an electrician in Pettigo. He then ran his own repair garage and taxi services at Rossharbour. In 1951 he joined Munster Simms, an oil company, as a sales representative progressing on to B.P. (British Petroleum) as an area manager. He remained there until he took early retirement at 55 years.

Shortly after his retirement he took up a post with Total Oils, where he worked until his passing.

In 1949, he met Helen Long at a Church Sports Day at Drumbad Primary School, Roscor, where Helen was a teacher. They got married two years later and lived at Drumbad before moving to Ballinamallard in 1955. They celebrated 63 years of married life together in March last year. Their four children Raymond, Joan; Shirley, and Clive grew up in Ballinamallard.

Helen and his family were everything to him. He was very proud of them and loved them all.

He adored his eight grandchildren and his two great grandchildren. Joe, Helen and the family suffered great pain when Raymond passed away in 1999.

Joe committed his life to his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ at a mission in Tullychurry in June 1953. He was a Methodist from his birth but had an open heart for evangelical Christianity, whatever the label.

He loved life so much especially swimming, gardening, cycling, walking and music. Joe had a wonderful singing voice. Holidays in Rossnowlagh and abroad and visits to his brother Herbert in Devon were also a source of much pleasure. Joe was a man of generosity and integrity - qualities which were evident in his business and personal life. He was jovial, had a great sense of humour and was lots of fun - cherished memories which he leaves behind.

His funeral service at Ballinamallard Methodist Church attracted a large attendance which was evidence of the high esteem in which Joe was held. The uplifting service was conducted by the Rev. John Beacom. The Rev. Billy Buchanan, a retired Methodist Minister, who was a family friend delivered the tribute. The hymns were: The Old Rugged Cross; Be still, for the presence of the Lord; and Shall we gather at the River. Burial was at Sydare Cemetery.

Joe is survived by his wife, Helen; daughter Joan and husband Ernie, daughter Shirley and husband William, son Clive and wife Fiona, daughter-in-law Leah, and their families.

He is also survived by his brother John in Belfast and the wider family circle. His brother Herbert in Devon, sadly, passed away shortly after Joe’s death.

Joe was predeceased by his son Raymond, sisters Lena, Marion and Lily and by his brothers, Arthur, Arnold and Fred.

The funeral arrangements were professionally administered by S.R. Elliott and Sons, Darling Street, Enniskillen.
