Widespread shock and sadness have been felt in the community following the recent unexpected passing in the Mater Hospital, Belfast, of Mrs. Norma Suzanne Fitzpatrick. The loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother, late of Rossculban Court, Kesh, died on December 5, 2014, aged 59 years.

Norma was born into a farming family in 1955. The younger of two daughters, born to William and Mary Elliott, she leaves her sister Barbara. The townland was Creaghmore, in the region of Dernasesk, and the girls attended Sunday School in Dernasesk.

In the early sixties, the family moved to Clonaweel and the girls attended Clonelly School, which has long since closed.

From there, Norma progressed to the Duke of Westminster High School in Kesh, and then on to South West College in Enniskillen, as it is now known.

Norma could have gone further in her education but as her mother was in failing health she stayed at home to help with her care.

She worked in the Palm Bush Filling Station, whilst at the same time doing a little sideline of home baking for friends and neighbours. In addition, she worked in Loane’s in Kesh.

Norma struggled through much of her adult life with a disability, the result of a car accident back in November 1982. She never once complained.

A year after the accident, Norma married Gordon Fitzpatrick in Drumkeeran Parish Church, Tubrid on June 18, 1983. For about 10 years they lived at Clonelly and then moved into Rossculban Court in Kesh.

In her younger years, Norma would have read lessons in church, and right up until the end, she would have helped with the singing on a Sunday morning in Templecarne Parish Church, Pettigo. She took part at the most recent Harvest Service, and helped with the decorating of the church for the service.

Until her accident, Norma had been an officer in 1st Pettigo Girls’ Brigade.

A Service of Thanksgiving for the life of Norma Fitzpatrick was held on December 8, 2014, in Templecarne Parish Church, Pettigo. It was conducted by Chancellor Cecil Pringle, minister at Pettigo, assisted by Canon William Johnston, a friend of the family. A reading was delivered by Norma’s daughter Jennifer.

The hymns were The Lord’s My Shepherd, Father, I Place into your Hands, and How Great Thou Art, and the organist was Mrs. Irene Boyd.

After the burial at Sydare Cemetery, everyone was invited to join the family for tea in Kesh Community Centre, organised by Dromard Orange Lodge LOL 284. The family is very appreciative of everyone’s kindness and generosity at this time. Norma is survived by her husband Gordon, daughters Julie-Ann and Jennifer, and sons William and Graeme; her grandson Ronan; and sister Barbara and husband Bertie Somerville. She also leaves family on her husband’s side, the wider family circle and her friends. The funeral arrangements were by F.G. McFarland and Sons, Funeral Directors, Kesh.
