Enniskillen lost one of its much loved and highly respected people on September 1, 2015, with the death of Mrs. Joan Moffatt, who passed away peacefully in the Tilery Nursing Home, Florencecourt.

She finally lost her battle against a severe head injury, which occurred as a result of a fall. She had spent a number of months in hospital, and then moved into the Tilery.

Joan was one of four children of Jack and Alice Bustard, Ballintra, Donegal. She is survived by her sister Norma Browne and brothers Kenneth Hamilton and David Bustard.

She was educated at Robertson National School, Ballintra, and then progressed to Sligo Grammar School as a boarder. Joan then undertook her Physiotherapy degree in Trinity College, Dublin. She was Junior Sports Mistress for Masonic Girls’ School during this time.

Joan began her career as a Physiotherapist in Altnagelvin Hospital, Londonderry. She also spent six months doing Hydrotherapy training in Bath.

She met Stanley Moffatt from Drumquin at the Show Dance in Enniskillen in 1964. Joan loved to dance and found a life long dance partner in Stanley. They married on June 12, 1968 in Drumholm Parish Church. Ballintra.

When they were first married they lived in a flat in Enniskillen before making their home in Belcoo, close to Stanley’s business, J.N. Carson Quarry. They became valued members of Mullaghdun Parish Church, Letterbreen.

Joan began working in the Physiotherapy Department in the Erne Hospital after her marriage and thoroughly enjoyed her time there, building up a large network of friends.

Joan and Stanley then expanded their family, first with their son John, then their daughter Heather.

Joan was a wonderful mother who dedicated her life to her family and friends.

She finished working at the Erne Hospital so she could spend time with her children as well as the many after school activities that came along.

Joan had many interests including badminton, keep fit, walking her dog Cara, coffee mornings with friends and various charity work.

She was heavily involved with the Enniskillen Chest, Heart and Stroke Club, Lifeboat Association and the Parkinson’s Society due to suffering from Parkinson’s in the latter years. She never let this slow her down.

Joan was a long serving member of Mullaghdun Mothers’ Union. She dedicated over 40 years to it and thoroughly enjoyed every one of them.

She loved to get back to her native Donegal, especially Rossnowlagh and Donegal Town to visit her sister in Magee’s Coffee Shop.

Joan, Stanley and the children would spend as many weekends as possible in Rossnowlagh, spending quality time with close family and friends.

After Stanley retired, they took time together to enjoy many holidays, especially cruises which Joan preferred.

Joan and Stanley have been members of Erne Vintage Car Club since its inception, very rarely missing a run or a meeting. They made many life long friends through this.

Joan had a strong Christian faith which showed through her interactions with everyone. She was highly respected in the church and enjoyed being involved in the church activities.

While Joan was in hospital after her fall, and then in the Tilery Nursing Home, she received visits from many different clergy.

The high regard felt for Joan was reflected in large attendances at both her removal and at her funeral service at Mullaghdun Parish Church. The service was conducted by Canon Geoffrey Bridle and the Venerable Cecil Pringle. Burial took place at Mullaghdun Churchyard.

Having made her own funeral arrangements, it was her wish that donations in lieu of flowers be directed to the Parkinson’s Society.

The funeral arrangements were by Funeral Directors, W.T. Morrison, Enniskillen.
