Mrs. Dorothy Maud Butler

The death has occurred of Dorothy Maud Butler (nee Carson) affectionately known as Dorah to all her family and friends.

Dorah passed away peacefully on Thursday morning, February 4, 2010 at the Erne Hospital, Enniskillen with all her family at her bedside.

Daughter of the late Herbert and Frances Carson, born in Taverbeg, Garrison on November 7, 1923, she attended Knockaraven school in Garrison and later the family moved to Ballinamallard.

Dorah attended Ballinamallard School and after leaving school she went to work in Wilson's of Ferny, Ballinamallard.

Dorah joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service and served until the war ended in 1945. She was stationed at Carrickfergus where she met her future husband, James Butler who was in the Royal Army Service Corp.

They were married on May 29, 1943 in Magheracross Parish Church, Ballinamallard.

When the war ended, James and Dorah went to live in Main Street, Lisbellaw with her parents until they got their first home at 13 Cloughcor Crescent, Lisbellaw in 1950.

Their first son, Stanley was born, followed by only daughter Lilah, Raymond and the late Derek Butler.

When the family were grown up, Dorah worked in Enniskillen High School until retirement.

Her husband James passed away on May 7, 1986 followed later by their youngest son, Derek on August 28, 2000.

She had several health problems over the years but did not let it get her down. She was always a cheerful, bright and caring person, always a smile on her face.

In November 2008, Dorah fell and spent a long spell in hospital with her health declining. In June 2009 she went back to her home in Lisbellaw and fought a long battle learning to walk again and getting out and about. She had a great will and determination.

Dorah loved to travel with her daughter Lilah, going to England to visit her son Stanley and his family and to her niece, Deirdre and family and her late sister, Elsie Boles. She visited Canada, Italy, Austria and other countries over the years.

Her greatest ambition was to attend the Royal British Legion Act of Remembrance at Whitehall in London, The Festival of Remembrance in the Royal Albert Hall, The Field of Remembrance and Westminster Abbey. This she did with her daughter Lilah and son-in-law Cecil Graham in November 2006.

She was a great person for supporting charity work, selling tickets for the Royal British Legion of which she was a long standing member as well as Age Concern and numerous other charities.

She had a great passion for flowers, her greatest hobby working in the garden, changing the flowers each season and watching the birds. She loved to bake in her early years until it became too difficult. She was a great person for reading and enjoyed the library bus coming around.

Dorah was a member of Lisbellaw Mothers' Union and Wednesday Club and attended Lisbellaw Parish Church regularly until ill health prevented her going out.

She adored her grandchildren and looked forward to their visits, as well as her great-grandchildren.

Dorah's passing was a huge shock and loss to all her family, friends and neighbours. Dorah was the sole remaining tenant in Cloughcor Crescent from that era in 1950.

The funeral took place after a service in Lisbellaw Parish Church conducted by the Rev. Bryan Kerr. The organist was Linda Lindsay who played the hymns "Nearer My God To Thee" and "Abide With Me". A tribute was paid to Dorah from her granddaughter Elaine Butler and John Craig sang her favourite hymn "The Old Rugged Cross".

There was a special tribute paid to Dorah by members of The Royal British Legion, Enniskillen at the burial in Tattygar Cemetery.

Lisbellaw Mothers' Union provided tea in the Parish Hall.

Mrs. Butler is survived by her only daughter Lilah (Mrs. Cecil) Graham, sons and their families, Killyvilly; sons Stanley (Vivienne), daughters and son-in-law, Bangor; Raymond (Pauline), sons and daughters and family circle, Maguiresbridge and daughter-in-law Marian and family, Ferny Rise. She also leaves nephews, nieces, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her brother Cecil (Lily) Carson and family, Lisbellaw and another brother, Herbie (Eileen) Carson and family, Antrim.

Mrs. Butler was predeceased by her husband James and youngest son Derek and her sister Elsie Boles.

Funeral arrangements were carried out in a very dignified and professional manner by W.T. Morrison, Funeral Directors, Darling Street, Enniskillen with flowers from the family and all other donations to Alzheimer's, c/o W.T. Morrison.
