A range of seminars for sheep producers is being organised by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to explain the rules of the sheep electronic identification (EID) and goat identification system.
According to DARD, the local seminar at the Enniskillen Campus of CAFRE taking place on Tuesday, March 2, will be a good opportunity for keepers to ask questions on the new rules, which came into operation at the beginning of this year.
Guidance booklets together with flock/herd registers and movement documents will be sent to keepers in the coming weeks. The current flock or herd registers and movement documents should be used until then.
Guidance on the rules can be found on the DARD website at www.dardni.gov.uk/animal-movements-sheep-and-goats.
The introduction of sheep EID is an EU obligation under Council Regulation 21/2004 and requires the individual identity of sheep and goats born after 31 December 2009 to be recorded when they are moved.
In order to allow this to be achieved for sheep, the Regulation requires them to be identified with an EID device and a conventional tag. Goats can be tagged with two conventional tags.
The Sheep and Goats (Records, Identification and Movement) Order (NI) 2009 came into operation on 31 December 2009 with the objective to make it easier to trace animals.
