POLICE are to 'drug' night-time revellers with lollipops laced with sugar in an attempt to sweeten potential villains, The Impartial Reporter can reveal.
Fermanagh's finest unveiled their sugar-coated weapon this week at Enniskillen Police Station as part of operation Safer Southwest.
It means partygoers congregating around the Diamond on a Saturday night will soon be able to swap their cheesy chip for a suck on a Strawberry Chupa Chup instead.
Inspector Roy Robinson -- who some are calling Willy Wonka -- believes the lollipops will reduce tension and promote good relations with police.
He says would-be thugs will not be able to shout or cause a disturbance after closing time while sucking on the lollipops.
"It's a novel way to promote interaction and banter with crowds at closing time. Those sucking the lollipops will hopefully be distracted from using verbal abuse to others as their mouths will be otherwise occupied," says Inspector Robinson.
The sweet-toothed Inspector says the initiative which has been running in England and Canada has been 'scientifically proven' to put one's mind at ease.
"There is a scientific opinion that the increase in blood sugar from lollipops promotes a calmer mindset by those consuming them," he said.
In a detailed e-mail to all PSNI colleagues across Fermanagh this week, Inspector Robinson ordered his officers to make "sensible use" of the lollipop allocations to make sure they "last for a while".
But speaking to this newspaper yesterday, one Enniskillen officer said "no suckin' way" to the new safety scheme.
"That's the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard, I want nothing to do with it."

Report commentWhat a great idea from the PSNI, ive seen this scheme at work in Canada and it has single handedly reduced the number of murders in their major cities by over 85%. Unfortunately the 15% of murders still being committed were by people using the lollipops as deadly weapons. Still you can't have it both ways. Fnarrrr, fnarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
