Plans are being put in place to help many patients from the west who have to travel to Belfast for treatment on eye conditions such as macular degeneration, SDLP health spokesperson Tommy Gallagher has confirmed. Speaking following a meeting with the Western Trust, the Fermanagh and South Tyrone MLA said: “I can confirm that the Western Trust is putting into motion plans to deliver this service at Omagh’s Tyrone County Hospital.
“The west was without this important service therefore many local people had to attend the Mater Hospital in Belfast. Those patients were recently informed by the Western Trust that their treatment was being discontinued forthwith, causing much annoyance. The patients were told that they were being switched to Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry and, as well as changing hospital, they found that the public transport for their appointments was completely unworkable.
“I have been in contact with the Mater Hospital and have raised the patients’ difficulties with the Western Trust. As a result, I have been assured that the Western Trust will now arrange for this service to be delivered in Omagh.
“This is a much better outcome for the considerable number of local people in need of eye treatment. I’m also hopeful that those patients who have begun their treatment in Belfast will be allowed to complete it.”
