The van is recovered from the crash scene near Brookeborough following the weekend fatal crash.
“It is just such a waste. We don’t how the accident happened, all we know is that John is gone and nothing will ever get him back.”
The moving words of Paul McKeever who lost his 19-year-old son John in a tragic road traffic accident in Fermanagh at the weekend.
The teenager was a passenger in a white Mercedes sprinter van which crashed along the main Belfast road near Brookeborough in the early hours of Saturday morning.
No other vehicle was involved and two other men were taken to hospital. Their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
It’s understood the men were travelling from Brookeborough to Fivemiletown when the van crossed the road and struck the bank and a telephone pole.
Speaking this week, Mr. McKeever’s father said: “It is very hard to put into words what this has done to the family. John was very lively and active lad. When he wasn’t playing sports or working on cars he was helping me on the farm. We all thought the world of John and he thought the world of us, that is the way we are -- just a very close family,” he said.
His son is a former pupil of St. Patrick’s College who played both Gaelic for his club Errigal Ciaran and rugby for Dungannon Rugby Club.
PSNI Inspector Roy Robinson said Saturday’s accident was a “terrible tragedy” and expressed his “heartfelt condolences” to the young man’s family.
He said his officers are seeking information: “We believe there were two other cars on the road at the time of this accident and are appealing for those drivers to come forward,” he said.
Anyone who witnessed the white Mercedes sprinter panel van travelling along the road or as it collided with a telephone pole is asked to contact police in Fermanagh on 0845 600 8000.
