The President of the Ulster Farmer’s Union, John Thompson, has called for the immediate abolition of the Agricultural Wages Board, labelling it an unwanted quango costing the taxpayer an unecessary expense.

Thompson asked the Agriculture Minister, Michelle Gildernew to follow DEFRA’s example in announcing the end of the AWB, the move having been enacted in England and Wales.

He said, “Since the NI Assembly was restored in May 2007, the UFU has repeatedly called on Minister Gildernew to remove the Agricultural Wages Board.”
