Fermanagh District Council has advertised for the post of Chief Executive, currently held by Mr. Brendan Hegarty. He took over firstly in an Acting Chief Executive role during the year following the retirement on March 31 of Mr. Rodney Connor. He was subsequently appointed Chief Executive since May.

The post of chief executive was advertised on Friday by the Local Government Staff Commission for Northern Ireland which handles Council staff recruitment.

The job which carries a salary of £76,452 and four increments of £1.815 each, has been described as the Chief Financial Officer of the Council and has the final responsibility on legal matters.

“The Chief Executive is the Head of the Council’s paid staff and its principal adviser on policy matters. The Chief Executive has the responsibility for managing the efficient, effective and equitable discharge of responsibilities of the Council. The Chief Executive is responsible for providing effective leadership, engaging with elected members and developing the Council as an efficient, effective, innovative and adaptive organisation,” a spokesman for the Local Government Staff Commission said.

Fermanagh Council is unique among the 26 local authorities in Northern Ireland, as it covers an entire county. With a growing population of 57,600 of which 70 per cent live in rural areas, it has the fastest predicted population growth of any other area of the Province of 1.5 per cent per year. The Local Government Staff Commission say that Fermanagh has high levels of housing unfitness, long term unemployment and rural deprivation, all above the Northern Ireland average.

According to the Local Government Staff Commission, applicants must hold a degree or a Diploma in Public or Municipal Administration or equivalent and a qualification in accountancy. They also must have three years senior management experience

Applications for the post close at 12 noon on Wednesday, January 5 2011. Assessments will be carried out in mid January and interviews held on Friday, January 28.
