Visitors to Fermanagh will not only be able to enjoy the magnificent scenery of the lakes, forests and mountains of the county. But they can also learn about the county's myths and legends and hear stories about life here in past years from noted storytellers.

It has been made possible through the Enchanting Fermanagh project to which the Northern Ireland Tourist Board is contributing £22,500 through its Tourism Innovation Fund.

The Tourism Minister, Arlene Foster, a native of the county, launched a new audio trail project to promote the Fermanagh Lakelands. There are three tourist trails stretching from west Fermanagh through to Upper Lough Erne and a CD has been produced to tell the stories, myths and legends of the county.

Speaking after the launch at Fermanagh County Museum, the Minister said: "The development of tourist trails and accompanying audio guides is an example of how innovative thinking can provide new ways of promoting our attractions to domestic and overseas visitors. It is our culture and heritage, our stories and characters, which set Northern Ireland apart from any other destination. The 'Enchanting Fermanagh' project provides a modern way of bringing these stories to life." Stories featured on the new CD include tales as varied as 'The Happy Pigs of Inishcorkish' featuring Pat O'Doherty and his famous Fermanagh Black Bacon, to Royal Scholars at Portora Royal School and Charlotte's Rose Garden at Florencecourt House.

The launch event was attended by members of Fermanagh Lakeland Tourism and the many local people who told the stories which are featured on the CD. Guests were also treated to some live story telling by Erne Heritage Tour Guides and enjoyed some tasty local food prepared by Joe Kelly of the Kitchen Academy.

Tanya Cathcart, Marketing Manager, Fermanagh Lakeland Tourism said: "I want to pay tribute to everyone involved in the project, especially all the storytellers who helped to create new and interesting memories for visitors about some of the well-known and, more importantly, some of the hidden gems in the county.

"It is thanks to the Northern Ireland Tourist Board's Innovation Fund that this project was undertaken with match funding from Fermanagh District Council. 'Enchanting Fermanagh' will provide another tool to market the region and give visitors a flavour of local stories, myths and legends." The trails are available on CD and stocked in the Fermanagh Tourist Information Centre. They are also featured on the home page of the Fermanagh Lakelands website http://www.fermanaghlakelands.com and will soon will be available as Bluetooth downloads in the Fermanagh Tourist Information Centre for the visitor to take away on their mobile phone, ipod and mp3 player.
