The new £276 million South West acute Hospital is due to open for patients on Friday, June 22 next year.
Western Health and Social Care Trust Chief Executive, Elaine Way, announced the date this week.
Speaking at the site of the new hospital at Wolf Lough on the Irvinestown Road, Mrs Way said: "I am delighted to announce that the Western Trust is working towards a planned operational opening date for the new hospital of June 22, 2012. I would like to pay tribute to the efforts of the Western Trust staff and NIHG for keeping this monumental project on track. It is no easy task to keep a state-of-the-art hospital facility of this magnitude on track and on course. The building of a £276 million state-of-the-art acute hospital facility that will change the face of healthcare delivery in the area is a once in a lifetime project."
Western Trust Deputy Chief Executive, Joe Lusby, said the next stage would focus on hospital planning "to ensure the safe and seamless transfer of patients and services from the existing Erne Hospital site to the new South West Hospital facility".
"The Western Trust's newly established commissioning group is engaging staff right across the Trust and is developing detailed plans to make this happen. Staff have shown tremendous commitment to this landmark project and are equally looking forward to the operational opening date. I have no doubt that this commitment will continue as we move into the final year of construction and equipping and the opening of the new hospital."
Dr Jim Kelly said that the hospital is much more than just a building. "It is a project which will deliver many benefits for the thousands of patients who will receive their healthcare treatment at the new hospital for generations to come. The new state-of-the-art facility will radically enhance the patient experience allowing our staff to deliver more effective ways of working in a purpose build acute hospital with access to the very latest technologies and equipment."
