Sinn Fein Fermanagh south Tyrone MP Michelle Gildernew's name has been suggested as a potential candidate for the Irish presidential race. The politician's name was thrown into the mix by her Sinn Fein colleague, TD Martin Ferris, during a radio interview on TuesdayMr. Ferris told Radio Kerry that Sinn Fein will announce whether or not it's running a candidate for the presidential election by next week. When asked who he thought was a suitable candidate in his party, Mr. Ferris reportedly put Ms. Gildernew's name forward. The Fermanagh and South Tyrone MLA and former agriculture minister has certainly built up a considerable profile in Northern Ireland but some commentators have queried whether or not she'd have a significant enough profile in the South in order to stand.
Ms. Gildernew could not be reached for comment this week. However, a spokesperson for her, said: "Sinn Fein has not made any decision on our participation/non-participation or our endorsement of another candidate in the presidential election and will not do so until after the Ard Fheis which is being held in Belfast next weekend."
It's understood candidates must be declared nearly a month ahead of polling day with September 28 set as the final date for nominations.
So far there are four confirmed candidates: Fine Gael's Gay Mitchell, Labour's Michael D Higgins and Independents Sean Gallagher and Mary Davis.
Last month, veteran broadcaster and TV personality Gay Byrne decided not to run for the Irish presidency after much speculation he would stand.
