Work on Cherrymount Link to begin in days
CONSTRUCTION work on the Cherrymount Link Road in Enniskillen will commence in less than a fortnight following an announcement by Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy today (Thursday) that £12.85 million will be invested in the scheme.
Mr. Kennedy is due to arrive in Enniskillen this morning to unveil the exciting plans with Divisional Roads Manager Pat Doherty and the appointed contractors, PT McWilliams and McLaughlin and Harvey who will start work on September 26 in the hope of completing it by Spring 2013. Both firms were successful in securing a £5.46 million contract to carry out the work.
The scheme comprises of two kilometres of proposed new trunk road, connecting the existing Cherrymount roundabout on the A32 on the north of the town, to the B80 Tempo Road, on the southeast of the town. The first 600 metres leading from Cherrymount roundabout utilises the existing carriageway, with local widening being carried out over this stretch. The remaining 1400 metres provides a new link to the existing Tempo Road adjacent to Burrendale with new roundabouts at its junction with Lawnakilla Way and Lower Chanterhill/Coa Roads. The Minister says the scheme is "extremely worthwhile" and "long awaited" by road users in the Enniskillen area.
"On completion, the scheme will provide a new strategic link to the east of the town and will therefore help relieve traffic congestion in the town, reduce delays and driver frustration, and improve road safety," he said.
Construction of the new link road will also improve access to and from the new South West Acute Hospital, which opens next year.
