Police are warning of a computer scam following an incident yesterday (Wednesday) when a local woman was robbed of £400.

A PSNI spokesman said it was one of a number of similar incidents in recent weeks.

The woman, who lives in the Clogher Valley, received a phone call purporting to be from Microsoft asking for access to her computer to clear her system of viruses. She allowed the caller to remotely access her computer and also gave her credit card number. Almost £400 was stolen from her account.

She later became worried and checked with Microsoft, who confirmed that the call was a scam.

Other similar reports have been received over recent weeks and police are warning local people to be vigilant and protect themselves against unscrupulous criminals who are constantly identifying and developing new methods to defraud innocent people.

Police would advise that personal details never be disclosed to unsolicited callers or via email or online. Legitimate companies will not usually approach you in this way.

If you have any concerns or require any further advice or information please feel free to contact your local crime prevention officer on 0845 600 8000.
