Man called police and then assaulted officer
A 32-year-old unemployed man called police to a family dispute and then assaulted one of the officers, Fermanagh Court has been told.
Martin Peter Cooney, of Carrowshee Park, Drumhaw, Lisnaskea, admitted the offence and was put on probation for six months.
A prosecutor explained that at approximately 8.20pm on May 25, police were called to a house where they were approached by Cooney. He was in a very agitated state and struck out with his forearm, hitting an officer in the throat. He was taken to Omagh Police Station where he told the officer: "I'm sorry for hitting you, I'm angry."
Defence solicitor, Mr. Gary Smyth, said Cooney was at his uncle's house and there had been drink consumed. There was some sort of a disturbance and Cooney phoned the police.
Mr. Smyth told the court Cooney had difficulties with his physical and mental health.
Deputy District Judge Paul Conway said Cooney's criminal record, including a previous conviction for a serious assault, gave him some cause for concern. The pre-sentence report highlighted some issues in Cooney's life which, if they were addressed, might prevent him from offending in the future.
He said putting him on probation would give him the opportunity to get his life back on track and reduce the risk of him re-offending.
