Julie checked ticket after hearing about missing winner
Twenty-eight year old Julianne Mullin from Fermanagh had five hundred reasons to smile today when she collected a cheque for €500,000 at National Lottery offices.
BELLEEK was buzzing with excitement at the weekend with the news that 28-year-old Julianne Mullin had scooped up a cheque for €500,000 in the EuroMillions Plus draw.
The sales representative for JG Kelly Supplies in Monaghan bought her lucky €6 Quick Pick ticket on Thursday, January 5.
But it wasn't until last Tuesday that she learned of her winnings.
And speaking to The Impartial Reporter on Monday after a whirlwind week, she admitted that the reality of her big win was only just beginning to hit home.
"It's been a strange week, but a good week. I'm really pleased and it's a nice amount too," said Julianne, "It's manageable -- I think! And it's just so nice to have that sense of security when it comes to money.
"I bought the ticket in Monaghan on the Thursday and never really thought any more about it. Then on the Tuesday I was in a shop in Monaghan getting some lunch for a colleague and the girls behind the counter were talking about a missing Lotto winner. We started chatting about what you would spend the money on. Then I remembered I had a ticket in my purse."
Julianne checked her ticket at the quick scanner in the same shop she had bought it from.
"It came up saying 'Winner, please contact Lotto headquarters," she explained, "I was in complete shock. I almost didn't believe it at first. So I went to the counter and got someone to check it through the till there. They confirmed that I was a winner."
Her colleagues at JG Kelly Supplies were the first to learn of her good fortune.
"When I went back to the office and told them, they just looked at me as if I'd gone mad, they couldn't believe it. Then I rang my family and my boyfriend. They were the same.
"But when it actually began to sink in that it was true, they were delighted. We had a great day on Friday at the Lotto Headquarters when I received the cheque. And we are going to have a party at the weekend to mark it properly ourselves.
"I have had so many phone calls and text messages and cards from people all saying congratulations -- it's so nice -- even from customers."
It's not the first time Julianne has won in the EuroMillions draw. Although on the last occasion, her winnings were a slightly smaller sum of €68!
"Through my job I travel the whole country and I would do the EuroMillions all the time. But I genuinely never thought I would win anything, and so close to home as well. The last time I won I got my money in Easons and ended up spending it on books right away!"
It may take a bit longer to spend her winnings this time round though, but she already has plans to spend some of her €500,000 cheque on a trip to Australia in the summer.
"I had asked my boss for some time off in July to go to Australia -- all my friends are all out there," she explained, "So the money means I am now definitely going to be able to go out and see them. Other than that it's nice to know that I have the money there for a house if I wanted or a car.
"I want to treat my family too and my boyfriend."
And the Belleek girl intends to continue her weekly trip to the shops for a Quick Pick ticket.
"I was in getting a ticket today actually!" she joked, "The man at Lotto Headquarters said quite a few people have won twice! But I'm not being greedy though, I'm happy with what I've got."
