Sewage on doorstep after heavy rain
Marion Anderson looks at the weather forecast with great interest these days and when she hears about forthcoming heavy rain, she knows there could be problems outside her door. Because she says every time there is heavy rainfall, a manhole overflows with sewage from houses built around her.
Marion (right) who lives at Mantlin Road, Kesh, says the problem has been ongoing for a number of years and despite officials from Northern Ireland Water looking at the situation, she feels very little has been done to solve the underlying problem. She says her message is passed on to contractors who simply clean out the manhole with a suction machine. But she says that does not cure the cause of the problem.
Her house is at the entrance to a cul de sac where a number of houses are built. She believes the problem lies with the overflow from storm drains getting into the sewerage system and when that happens, the raw sewage escapes out of the manhole which is situated right outside her doorstep.
"This has been happening once or twice a year over the last 10 years. It causes me more nuisance because everyone driving past will go through it. After 10 years I feel it should be investigated," explained Marion.
She said she had been away over Christmas but on her return, found the problem happening again.
"When I came back after Christmas I found the problem again," she says exasperated with the situation.
Now Marion is awaiting a further response from NI Water in an attempt to solve the problem once and for all.
In a statement to The Impartial Reporter, NI Water said "Following the completion of a sewer investigation, NI Water can confirm there are no defects with the sewer. NI Water has agreed with the customer to increase monitoring of the sewer and the adjacent Pumping Station for the next few weeks as a precaution."
