Death of respected hotelier in Spain
There has been widespread shock and sadness in the Clogher Valley at the news of the unexpected death in Spain of former Fivemiletown hotelier Mr. Eric Armstrong.
Mr. Armstrong (70) had been on holiday when he passed away on Monday, January 30. Married to Claire, he was father to Lorraine and Shan-nel and grandfather to his daughters' young children. He and Claire had been spending time at their holiday home, south of Estepona.
Mr. Armstrong bought the Four Ways Hotel in Fivemiletown eighteen years ago and ran it for eleven years. He had previously managed the Killyhevlin Hotel for the late Raymond McCartney. He held office in a number of organisations, fulfilling the role of President in Fivemiletown Chamber of Commerce and Chairman of the Lakeland Hotel Association. He was also a member of the Erne Vintage Car Club.
Fellow hotelier, Mr. John Williamson from the Valley Hotel in Fivemiletown paid tribute to his good friend and fellow businessman. Mr. Williamson said he had been shocked to hear the "dreadful news".
"We were always great friends down the years and would have helped one another in every respect," said Mr. Williamson. He recalled a successful family party to celebrate Mr. Armstrong's 70th birthday last September. "He was a great hotelier. He always knew the particulars about what he was doing. He always had new ideas about going forward in the business," he said.
Mr. Armstrong is survived by his wife Claire, daughters Lorraine and Shan-nel and brothers Nixon (Portadown) and Willis (Lisnarick). Funeral arrangements are to be made later.
