Dad drove uninsured to buy nappies

A 26-YEAR-OLD man who was caught by police in Enniskillen driving with no licence and no insurance had been heading into town to buy nappies for his child, Enniskillen Magistrates Court has been told.

James Sliman, Drumbawn, Drumclay, Enniskillen stopped at a police checkpoint at Forthill Road, Enniskillen on June 18 last year while driving a green Hyundai Accent.

When officers spoke to him he told them he had a provisionl license but had no insurance. Police noted he was alone in the vehicle at the time.

Defence solicitor Gary Smyth told the court his client had made full admissions at the earliest opportunity.

"He took it upon himself to go into Enniskillen town centre to buy nappies for one of his children," Mr Smyth told the court.

The defence barrister said his client had been working in the building trade but had experienced difficulties with his health and was now in receipt of benefits.

He said Sliman had every intention of getting himself "properly on the road" once he had gathered the appropriate finances.

Sliman was fined £350 in total and was disqualified from driving for two months.
