One of the signs protecting wildfowl around Lough Erne.

Wildfowlers were out from dawn to-day to mark the first day of the duck shooting season.

However this season, they are being met by a raft of new signs aimed at keeping them on the right side of the law.

They can shoot over most of Upper and Lower Lough Erne provided they have the proper permit issued by Lough Erne Wildfowlers' Council but there are a number of designated refuges where the shooting of ducks, geese and other waterfowl are prohibited. There are four sanctuaries around Enniskillen, at Knockninny and Castle Archdale and Castle Caldwell. 22 signs mark the boundaries of these refuges.
