A well-known and highly regarded Fermanagh solicitor, Mr. James Charles Brady, who practised at his Enniskillen office J.C. Brady and Son into his seventies, passed away peacefully at his Lisnaskea home on Sunday, January 12, aged 92 years.

Late of Eaglemount, Castlebalfour Road, Mr. Brady (whose son James T. Brady continues to run the practice of J.C. Brady) was laid to rest yesterday afternoon, Wednesday; his passing followed a long period of declining health.

The late James, a familiar face in many local clubs and organisations over the years, was a native of the county. Born on September 12, 1921, he was one of two sons of Charles and Alice Brady; his younger brother, Walter predeceased him. The brothers’ early education was attained at Carrowkeel School, Tempo, where their father was the Headteacher and they subsequently continued their studies at Portora Royal School, Enniskillen, where they were weekly boarders.

James studied for his Law Degree at Queen’s University Belfast, where he achieved his LLB qualification, and he had also been in the Police.

He worked for a short period for the late solicitor George Warren, and went from there to B.L. Winslow and Son at East Bridge Street, Enniskillen. He worked with Eric Winslow in the solicitors’ practice, and when Eric died, James took over the business of B.L. Winslow from Mervyn Winslow. It continued in that name until James’s son James joined him in 1984 and they established J.C. Brady and Son. James continued to work until his seventies, being in his late seventies when he fully retired.

He met the former Margaret Elizabeth Charlton, who was a GP in Fermanagh, and they married in Holy Trinity Church, Lisnaskea on August 14, 1957; their family of three are James, Julie and Michael.

James pursued many interests over his long career. He had enjoyed membership of the Round Table, the Rotary Club, Probus, the Ulster Architectural Society, the RSPB, Portora Board of Governors, Grassland and Field Clubs, the Young Unionists, and the Ulster Unionists.

He had been actively involved in Lisnaskea Chamber of Commerce and served as its President in 1975. Other service included that on Fermanagh County Council, and he had served as solicitor for the Clogher Diocesan Board. In addition, he had been a member of the Orange Order and also the Masonic Order.

Rugby also featured strongly in Jim’s life and as well as being on the Queen’s University RFC Junior cup winning team of 1948/49, he continued his interest at Enniskillen Rugby Football Club.

His funeral service at Holy Trinity Church, Lisnaskea, yesterday afternoon, Wednesday, was conducted by the Rev. Alan Capper. The Eulogy was delivered by a family friend Hope Kerr and family members were involved in the service.

James is survived by his wife Margaret and their children: James and wife Mary, Julie and husband David, and Michael and wife Una.

He also leaves seven grandchildren Gillian, James, Rebecca, Christopher, Emma, Ella and Kari.

The funeral arrangements were by Dowlers’ Funeral Services, Lisnaskea.
