25 YEARS AGO - April 20, 1989: St. Michael’s Win Schools’ Cup - St. Michael’s College, Enniskillen, won the B.H.S. Schools’ Cup at Dungannon yesterday, They won the final 5-3 after extra-time. It is a remarkable achievement for the young side in their first year in the competition. Full Report Next Week.

Visit to Palace - MAP - One of our Fermanagh Guides has an important date ahead of her - a visit to Kensington Palace for a reception being given by Princess Margaret. Marlynne Hopper is being accompanied by her parents, Hugh and Hazel, who live at Clohogue, near Tempo. Marlynne was presented with her Queen’s Badge by Rosamund Lady Langham, at Tempo Manor on Saturday in the presence of local Guide leaders. She enjoys Guiding, having started off in Tempo Brownies.

Marble Arch - Fermanagh Council has recently taken delivery of two life-size models of explorers for display at Marble Arch Caves. One model depicts the original explorer of the caves, a French caves scientist named Edouard Martel. Martel visited Marble Arch Caves in July 1895 and spent several days surveying the extensive cave system. The equipment and clothing used on the figure of Martel are authentic for the period. Comparison with the model depicting a modern caver gives a graphic illustration of the great advances in caves exploration techniques. The modern caver has vastly superior equipment. Barney Visits Caves - MAP - A tour of the Marble Arch Caves by an unusual visitor is being shown on Channel 4 T.V. at 11am on Monday morning - it should be a special attraction for children. On this occasion Barney the Puppet is being featured at the famous caves.

Feis judge ‘deeply moved’ - Competitors in Fermanagh Feis this week turned in tremendous performances in the music section. The adjudicator, Mr. Bob Leonard, judging the classical section earlier this week praised one particular piece by St. Colman’s band from Strabane. He said he had been deeply moved by the performance of the young musicians. “It is rarely we are so profoundly moved by a musical experience,” he said.

50 YEARS AGO - April 16, 1964: Fermanagh’s “Rosebud” - Miss Ann Prior, aged 19, was chosen as “Miss Rosebud” on Friday at the 6th annual Rosebud competition held in Newtownbutler. Mr. Jimmy Donohue of Premier Productions judged the competition. Ann will represent Fermanagh in Dublin where she will compete against finalists from all over Ireland. The winner of the contest will go on a tour of Europe. Mr. Ignatius O’Neill, secretary, acted as M.C. at the dance which was held in a large marquee. Mr. Michael Reilly is the chairman of the parish hall fund committee, which organised the Newtownbutler Easter Carnival.

MAP - Augher Girl is Dairy Princess - Twenty-three-year-old Gladys Kirkpatrick, of Glenhoy House, Augher, where her father farms, was chosen at a Young Farmers’ Club dance in Dungannon on Friday night as the new County Tyrone Dairy Princess. She received her £25 cash prize and sash of office from the reigning Ulster Dairy Queen, Miss Marie McGauley. Gladys, a trainee dresser, in a Dungannon clothing factory, has dark brown hair and brown eyes. Dressmaking is her hobby as well as her trade. She will represent County Tyrone in the final of the Ulster Dairy Queen competition in Belfast on 17th June.

Fermanagh Girl Guides - 1st Tempo Company Wins Harkness Cup - The 1st Tempo Guide Company team - Patrol Leader Dawn Abraham, Joan Armstrong, Ruth Elliott and Sheila Nixon, under their captain, the County Commissioner, Lady Langham, won the Harkness Cup Hike Competition in the demesne of Castlecoole, with 60 marks (out of a total of 70 marks). The 1st Lisbellaw team, with 58 marks, were runners-up, and 1st Florencecourt came 3rd with 50 marks.

Taylor-Woods Ltd. Changes - The big extension works at Taylor-Woods Hosiery Ltd., Enniskillen, are completed, as far as the Lingerie factory is concerned, and well on the way towards completion at the hosiery factory in Derrychara. Among changes planned to take advantage of the increased accommodation is the transfer of the Sales Order Office from London to Enniskillen, now in progress.

Trophy for Fivemiletown High School - photo caption - The senior girls’ table tennis team from Fivemiletown High School proudly show Mr. John Burrell, vice-Principal, the handsome trophy which they won when they defeated Methodist College, Belfast, in the final of the Ulster Schools Cup competition on Saturday. In the team were Emily Mitchell, holding the cup; and Joy Hall, Karen Armstrong and Georgina Morgan.

75 YEARS AGO - April 20, 1939: Vocalist’s Success - Miss Eileen Williamson, Clonfad, Newtownbutler is to be congratulated on her success at the Sligo Feis, which was held last week. She won the silver medal in the class for contralto solo, and received the compliments of the adjudicator, Mr. Maurice Jacobson, upon the quality of her lovely voice. A few weeks previously, Miss Williamson competed in the Drink Water Cup at Belfast, and was a ‘runner-up’ gaining 4th place out of 45 competitors. Miss Williamson is a pupil of Miss Gertrude F. Bryans, L.R.A.M., The Manse, Newtownbutler.

Things in General - The famous pianist and composer, Maurice Jacobson spent last Monday night with friends in Enniskillen. He was on his way from the Sligo Feis Ceoil.

Gifts - Gifts of fruit, sweets etc., have been sent by the Methodist Senior Christian Endeavour Society per the Misses McIntyre, Latimer and Burns to the inmates of Enniskillen Workhouse. Eggs were also received from the Enniskillen Boys’ Brigade per Mr. R. Coalter.

Next for Promotion - Things in General - Head Constable Reid, R.U.C., who had been stationed in Kesh and left that district for Larne at the end of 1937 came second in the recent examination held for promotion to the rank of District Inspector. He is now next on the list for promotion. He is a member of the old family at Drumcalgy, Letterbreen. His elder brother, Mr. John A. Reid is a prominent farmer and is chairman of the Springfield Co-operative Dairy Society.

Personal - Rear-Admiral Sir Basil Brooke has succeeded Mr. Arthur Penn as Groom-in-Waiting to the King. This Sir Basil is a second cousin of Sir Basil Brooke, Bart., M.C., of Colebrooke.

Gift - The iron ‘lung,’ the gift of Lord Nuffield, was delivered to the Enniskillen Fever Hospital on the 14th inst.

A Great Missioner - Rev. Lionel B. Fletcher, famous Empire evangelist, is at present conducting a mission in the Enniskillen Methodist Church, and thus, as he said, repaying a debt to Enniskillen which he owed his ancestor, the Rev. Wm. Horner, his great-grandfather, who was sent by John Wesley to Enniskillen in 1769. Following tea in the M’Arthur Hall, on Monday evening, representatives of all churches spent a happy hour in the church at a public welcome meeting to Mr. Fletcher.

Hailstorm - A hailstorm over Belfast on Thursday was so severe that pigeons were seen to have been knocked off roofs by the hailstones.
