75 YEARS AGO - June 8, 1939: The Heat Wave - Not since the year 1934 has Ulster experienced such a heat wave as has visited us during last and this week. At Enniskillen the thermometer registered 70 degrees in the shade, and it reached 83 in the sun. The country is looking beautiful under the warmth, and apple orchards promise a fine crop.

Things in General - The weather has been sweltering during the past week. Bathing in Lough Erne was like taking a tepid bath. Some rain fell early yesterday morning.

Music Success - Carol Little, Clabby, Fivemiletown, aged 11 years, has passed with first-class honours (92 marks), Grade IV, of the Royal Irish Academy of Music, in violin playing. Her brother, James, aged nine years, has also taken first-class honours, 91 marks, in violin, Grade I.

Newtownbutler - Church Reopened - Newtownbutler Methodist Church, which had been closed for some time for repairs, was reopened on Sunday. The special preacher was the Rev. Alexander M’Crea M.A.

St. John’s Ambulance Brigade - Division formed at Enniskillen - One has to go back, very far back, to find the very beginning of the Society of St. John. From something like 1113 A.D. on, the Order of St. John of Jerusalem has been working against accident, disease and sickness. It is the Senior Branch of the Red Cross organization of the Empire. On 30th ult. a meeting was convened by Lady Margaret Lowry-Corry in the Townhall, Enniskillen, to form a division of this brigade. Dr. Arthur Dickson made a warm impassioned speech to those present, mostly those who had finished an excellent series of home nursing lectures by Mrs. Mackenzie.

Personal - The name of Major Henry Cavendish Butler, Inisrath, Lisnaskea, will appear in the King’s Birthday Honours list.

Hymn Singing - 300 Voices in Cathedral - It was almost inspiring to hear the large Cathedral Church so full of musical sound as it was on Wednesday last (31st) when the mid-Clogher parishes joined in the hymn festival. Over 300 people had come into Enniskillen at their own expense mostly to take part in this occasion. The weather was exceptionally warm, yet the choirs rehearsed in the afternoon under the baton of their conductor, Mr. E. Lloyd Simon, A.R.C.O.

The 12th Holiday - Notice is given of a proclamation by his Grace the Governor appointing Wednesday, July 12, a bank holiday.

50 YEARS AGO - June 4, 1964: “Partnership in Trillick” - Parish Church Reopened - The “new look” which has been given to Trillick Parish Church was an outward and visible sign of the partnership between the clergy and the lay people of the church, said the Bishop of Clogher (Rt. Rev. Alan Buchanan, D.D.) after he had dedicated a new lighting and heating system in the church. There was a large congregation, with many visitors from neighbouring parishes, and extra seating had to be provided. In addition to the new heating and lighting, the church has been re-decorated.

Lisbellaw Cubs’ “Clean Sweep” - The annual Wolf Cub competition took place on Saturday at the Parochial Hall, Enniskillen. The competition resulted in a clean sweep for the Lisbellaw Pack whose “A” and “B” teams took 1st and 2nd place with Newtownbutler Pack 3rd. Ten teams competed. Mr. J. Nawn, the County Chairman presented the trophy to Jeremy Henderson, Sixer of the winning team.

Enniskillen Motor Club Formed - A Motor Club for Enniskillen has been formed by a group of young motoring enthusiasts and has been given official recognition by the Royal Automobile Club. The objects of the club are to further interest in motoring and motor sport; to provide members with information, advice and assistance on matters connected with motoring, etc. David Woolfenden has been appointed Chairman; George Balfour, secretary, and Eric Scott, treasurer.

The Fermanagh Society - The Fermanagh Society in Belfast will pay its annual visit to Fermanagh next Sunday. In the morning the members will attend service in the Methodist Church, Newtownbutler, and before returning home from a tour of the country will have “high tea” at the Manor House, Killadeas.

Commerce Chamber for Irvinestown - A Chamber of Commerce has been formed in Irvinestown at a meeting organised by two businessmen in the town, Messrs. Douglas Hudson, and Michael Scallon, on Thursday evening. There was a good attendance of business men and farmers at the meeting held in Irvinestown Technical School, and Mr. Hudson, who presided, explained that Irvinestown needed a voice to express its needs in the present day.

25 YEARS AGO - June 9, 1989: McClaughry’s second term - The position of Chairman of Fermanagh District Council is nothing new to Caldwell McClaughry. The 62-year-old from Leghan, Kesh, took up his second term in the “chair” on Monday afternoon. Previously he served in the council’s top post for two years from 1983 until 1985. He has been a member of the council for the past 10 years.

Young shepherd wins awards at Pettigo trials - Schoolboy shepherd, Allister Lyttle from Pettigo, took many of the honours at his local sheepdog trials last week. Allister (14), a pupil at the Duke of Westminster High School, Kesh, was awarded trophies for the best pen, best local competitor and the best young competitor under 25. Allister, a son of David and Noreen Lyttle, of Rossfield, Pettigo, began shepherding at the age of five, and has already won the all-Ireland junior championship. There were large crowds at Pettigo Sheepdog Trials on Thursday evening for the local event and on Friday for the open classes.

Wilf shows he is the ‘master’ - Two Enniskillen yachtsmen, Wilf Greene and John Walsh, took first and second places, and Omagh yachtsman, Bertie Forsythe took fourth place overall, in the GP14 dinghy racing Masters Championship in Larne at the weekend. All three are from Lough Erne Yacht Club, others came from Larne, and clubs around the coast, from Derry to Dublin Bay. GP14 dinghies have been raced in Ireland since the 1950s. This Masters Championship, the first of its kind, was organised by the GP14 Association of Ireland, and hosted by East Antrim Boat Club.

Jean takes ladies prize - Jean Sutherland won the Lady Captain’s Day competition at Enniskillen Golf Club on Saturday with a superb 67 nett, just ahead of Audrey King who also recorded a 67 nett. There was a full turnout for the Captain’s prize hosted by Lenore Sammon as golfers enjoyed excellent weather conditions.

Large crowds expected at Fleadh - If you are a traditional Irish music fan, then Ederney is the place to be this weekend. The little village in North Fermanagh hosts the Fermanagh County Fleadh on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The festival of music, song and dance should attract a large crowd to Ederney, which last hosted the Fleadh in 1979. The organisers have arranged a wonderful selection of events including a parade on Sunday afternoon. The music festival begins on Friday evening with a Ceili in St. Joseph’s Hall.
