Hamilton goalkeeper Michael McGovern has been delighted with the response of his new team to their opening day defeat to Inverness as they recorded back to back wins over St. Mirren and St. Johnstone to leave them with six points from their opening three games in the Scottish Premiership.

Hamilton were promoted from the Scottish Championship last season and manager Alex Neil moved to bring McGovern to the club after the Enniskillen man had impressed during his time at Falkirk.

And, although disappointed with the defeat to Inverness, McGovern is pleased with how the opening week of the season has gone for the Accies.

“Inverness are a very good team, they played in the Scottish Cup final last year, and we knew it was going to be very tough but we were very disappointed after the game. In pre-season you gear yourself up for the first game and there is weeks and weeks of preparation so to lose the first one was hard but we bounced back and played well against St. Mirren on the Wednesday and we were worthy winners away from home. That win gave us the confidence to go in on the Saturday and get another result over St. Johnstone who are a very good side, so it has been a great start and to have kept two clean sheets in the wins was very pleasing for me personally,” said McGovern.

The Northern Ireland international believes that those two wins have shown the players that they are capable of getting results in the top flight although he is keen to stress that it is very early days in the season.

“After the first game when we were beaten by Inverness everybody was writing us off but we showed in the next two games that we can definitely compete at this level and get results. If we can continue to play the way we did in the last two games then I’m sure we will continue to get results over the course of the season although we are very aware that it’s only early days, that’s just the first week of the season gone and we won’t be getting carried away. The last couple of results were brilliant but there is still another 35 games to go and we will just take each game as it comes.” McGovern has settled in well to life at Hamilton and is pleased to have the chance to test himself regularly in the Scottish top flight against the best teams and players in the country.

“All the boys have been different class to me. It is sort of similar to Falkirk in that it is a young team which is peppered with a few experienced players and I suppose I fall into that category myself. Playing in the top league is something I have wanted to do now for a couple of years. I did five years in the Championship so going up and facing different teams and essentially the best players in the country was the challenge for me and I’m enjoying my time at the moment. I had chances in the last few years to move over but I was playing regularly at Falkirk and I didn’t want to go somewhere and sit on the bench in the league above. I wanted to go somewhere I had a good chance of playing and at Hamilton the manager spoke to me and said I was part of his plans and I would be playing regularly in the first team and it was up to me to then do the business,” he stated.
