FERMANAGH District Council has had to call in police after a report of a theft of £20,000 by an employee was investigated, according to the Local Government Auditor’s Report 2014.
The theft took place in the last year and following an internal investigation the Council dismissed the employee and referred the matter to the police. According to the local government auditor, £19,000 was recovered through the Council’s insurers and the loss was reduced to around £1,000, which was the excess on the insurance policy. As a result of the theft the Council undertook a review of controls around cash collection and recording and introduced “more stringent controls”.
A spokeswoman for Fermanagh District Council told The Impartial Reporter: “During the financial year 2012/13, a theft by an employee was reported and investigated resulting in the dismissal of the employee. In response to this significant governance event a review of controls around cash collection and recording was undertaken and more stringent controls were introduced. This matter is currently subject to a PSNI investigation.”
