The 82-year-old mother of a severely disabled man who is facing a cut to his 20 hours a week at the Killadeas Day Care Centre has been “buoyed” by the messages of support she has received since last week’s coverage in the Impartial Reporter.

Margaret Carey and her daughter Una Lindsay met with Western Trust officials last Friday to discuss the Trust’s decision to cut Sean Carey’s four hours a day at Killadeas.

The family were told that Sean’s services will remain the same until the Trust has dealt with the complaint that the Carey family have lodged. The family’s complaint was logged on November 19, giving them until Wednesday, December 17 until they hear more.

Sean’s condition – Goldenhar Syndrome – has resulted in him being blind with challenging behaviours. Despite this, he is aware of and sensitive to any changes in his “regimented” routine. The family took issue with the fact that Mrs. Carey only got two days’ notice that Sean’s daycare facilities were to be cut. They are also questioning the specific criteria which resulted in Sean being the only person selected for cuts to his day care.

Speaking this week, Sean’s sister Una Lindsay says: “Our feeling after the meeting was that the Trust were back pedalling. They wouldn’t give us any straight answers as they said they couldn’t until the complaint process was finished.” She states: “We stand over that Sean was unfairly selected with no consideration of his basic necessity to maintain his routine and that the people who made the decision did not have anything in place to accommodate Sean or his mother.

“My mother has been buoyed by the support she has received she was reading all the facebook comments and couldn’t believe them. She’s a strong woman but this did take a lot out of her and, as she said herself at the meeting, the Trust have been saying ‘they have no money’ for as long as she has been dealing with them so it’s nothing new to her.” Una concludes: “All my mother wants is a secure and settled future for Sean and that he’s treated fairly. Sean wasn’t treated fairly here.”
