CHILDREN with autism had the chance to get up close and personal with none other than Santa Claus himself during a ‘Silent Santa’ event at Erneside recently.

Organised by the National Autistic Society West Enniskillen Branch, the special event allowed children with autism to enjoy some time with Father Christmas in a calm and peaceful environment.

The local branch of the National Austistic Society contacted management at Erneside in advance to enquire about holding an extra session with Santa for their children.

And as luck would have it, Santa had an opening in his busy diary and was more than happy to use the time to spend with children of the West Enniskillen Branch.

“Children with ASD can’t tolerate, due to sensory overload, loud noises, flashing lights, queues and so on,” explained Orla Humphreys from the autism group, “So what we did was set up an appointment time for each child to come and see Santa to avoid queueing.

“It started at 9.30am and finished at 11am, which was a great time, as Erneside was quiet.

“Santa knew in advance what to expect and was prepared for what ways our kids could react. There was no loud music, just peace and calm, and it went really well.” Due to the success of the event it is hoped Silent Santa can return again next year.

“We want to open it out to non-members also,” added Orla, “So all children affected with autism in Fermanagh get the chance to avail of Silent Santa.” For more updates, photographs and debate follow The Impartial Reporter on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/impartialreporter And on Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/impartialrep
